I should start knitting something for the warm weather that can't come soon enough but here are a few more cozier knits for you!
Merrie Dancers Toorie by Elizabeth Johnston is the annual Shetland Wool Week hat pattern for 2018. Knit the hat in any of the suggested colour variations, or come up with your own colour scheme.
This pattern provides two different size options. Each size uses a different yarn weight using 3.5 mm (US 4) needles.
Yarn Weight 1 (DK):
- 48.5 cm (19.25 in) circumference
- 27 sts and 27 rounds to 10cm over pattern after blocking
Yarn Weight 2 (fingering):
- 50 cm (19.75 in) circumference
- 29 sts and 29 rounds to 10cm over pattern after blocking

Kaana Shawlette by Jennifer Weissman a crescent-shaped shawlette knitted from the top down in worsted-weight yarn. Its shape and wide wingspan allow for multiple styles of wear. On a windy winter day, Ka’ana can be worn as a scarf, wrapped around the neck and tied securely in front. On a cool summer evening, Ka’ana’s curved top edge allows it to sit beautifully as a wrap, elegantly hugging the shoulders. Instructions for customizing the size are included in the pattern.
You will need about 600 yards of worsted weight yarn such as Malabrigo Rios or Zen Yarn Garden Serenity Worsted. 4.5 mm (US 7) and 6.0 mm (US 10) are the needles needed for a gauge of 16 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch. The finished size has a 60" wingspan and is 14.5" deep at the center.
Junko Okamoto's Rug is a top-down, bulky oversized sweater that is sure to keep you warn and cozy! It is knit using a chunky yarn for a gauge of 15 stitches and 17 rows = 4 inches in stockinette and colorwork with 5.50 mm (US 9) needles or the needle size needed to get gauge. This free pattern only includes one generous size that is so popular and looks great on so many. Knit it with Cascade Ecological Wool for an economically priced sweater.
WIP's and FO's
I have Melanie Berg’s On the Spice Market on my needles and yes I had finished section 1 last week but I frogged it back to Contrast Colour 1 and now I am back to the start of Section 3! I didn't like my edge where I had been using the method from the designer's special techniques. I had also been working row 2 in Section 3 wrong! I was slipping my yarn to the back instead of to the front and even though I liked the look, I frogged back. I am much happier with the results! I am using SweetGeorgia's Party of Five in Jelly Bean, my leftover SweetGeorgia CashLuxe Fine stash yarn from my Hitofude in Sapphire and Malabrigo Sock in Natural.
I am getting closer to the home stretch of the second Candy Cane Socks! Next year's Christmas socks will be finished early!
